ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Richard Cook, Esq: Richard P. Cook is the owner and managing attorney of Cape Fear Debt Relief, a boutique bankruptcy firm located in Wilmington, N.C. Founded in 2011, Cape Fear Debt Relief represents individuals and small businesses in Chapter 7, 11 and 13 cases before the U.S. Bankruptcy Courts in Eastern North Carolina. Richard is board certified by the North Carolina State Bar as a specialist in both business and consumer bankruptcy law. A proud double Tarheel. Richard received his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Richard serves as a Chapter 11 Subchapter V Trustee for the Eastern District of North Carolina. In 2020, Richard was recognized by the American Bankruptcy Institute as a “40 Under 40.” Richard is a frequent speaker at state and national bankruptcy conferences, regularly argues cases before the Fourth Circuit, and files amicus briefs on behalf of the National Association of Bankruptcy Trustees and the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys in various Circuit Courts of Appeals throughout the country.
David Cox, Esq.: David Cox is the founder and managing attorney of Cox Law Group, PLLC. He is a 1992 graduate of Virginia Tech and received his Juris Doctorate from the T.C. Williams School of Law in 1995. David served as a judicial clerk for the late Hon. William E. Anderson, U.S. Bankruptcy Judge for the Western District of Virginia.
David practices bankruptcy law throughout the Western District of Virginia and has offices in Lynchburg, Danville, Harrisonburg and Winchester. He is recognized as one of Virginia’s leading bankruptcy attorneys and has committed his practice to helping individuals, families, farmers and small businesses deal with debt and collections.
David is a permanent member of the Fourth Circuit Judicial Conference, a Fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy, and serves on the Board of Directors of the American Bankruptcy Institute. David also maintains memberships with the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys and the National Association of Chapter 13 Trustees. David is the co-editor of Bankruptcy Practice in Virginia and authored the fourth edition of the American Bankruptcy Institute’s book, Consumer Bankruptcy: Fundamentals of Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code. David also lectures frequently at numerous CLE programs related to bankruptcy nationwide.
In November 2022, David was elected as a member of the National Bankruptcy Conference, a non-profit, non-partisan, self-supporting organization of approximately sixty lawyers, law professors, and bankruptcy judges whose primary purpose is to advise Congress on the operation of bankruptcy and related laws.
